The next garden meeting will be held at 10am on Saturday, May 6th in the Village Hall.

Rid All Compost – is here (left bin).
Gardeners who ordered one portion can take 3 wheelbarrows full. Gardeners who ordered two portions can take 5 wheelbarrows full. Please pay Fred in person at the garden meeting, when you see him in the garden, or mail him a check. If you did not receive Fred’s email with his contact information and wish to send him a check, we can forward you the email if you let us know at orangevillagecommunitygarden@gmail.com.

Water has been turned on in the garden.

Composted Horse Manure is available for free in the right bin outside of the garden.

Rid-All compost is in the “Leaf Compost Only” wooden bin just outside of the garden.

This compost was purchased by Fred on behalf of gardeners who contacted Anna by Friday, April 28th. The compost is only for those who requested it in advance. Stay posted for how to pay Fred back.

Horse Manure is at the Garden!

Horse manure was delivered to the garden and deposited in the “Garden Waste Only” bin outside of the garden (because it was empty). Please take 1 wheelbarrow full per gardener for now to ensure enough for everyone.

On Monday, you may take another load, if available.

Until the horse manure is used, please temporarily do not put garden waster into the “garden waste only’ bin.

    Fellow Gardeners,
    Since our last monthly garden meeting, as promised, I have met with Damien Forsche, one of the principals of Rid-All Green Partnership to see if an arrangement could be made to buy some of their terrific compost. They are willing to deliver the compost to our garden site at a rate of $35 per cubic yard with a $35 delivery charge. The delivery charge is per load, not per cubic
    yard. In any case, if you are interested in participating in this endeavor, please contact Anna by April 28, 2017 as I would like to complete this order ASAP.
    I have calculated that one cubic yard of compost will give you approximately 1 ¼ inch layer of compost on a 10×20 foot plot and that approximately 4-6 wheel barrels full equals one cubic yard. Therefore, my suggestion is to order one cubic yard of compost per person, unless you would like more.
    Also, please note that the composted horse manure should be delivered shortly. We will be initially limiting the manure to one wheelbarrow full per gardener. We plan to give everyone 7 days to get their first load and if there is any left we will send another email concerning second loads.
    As a reminder to all gardeners, if you plan to store any tools or garden hoses in the shed it will be considered for use by all. If you do not want your items shared with others, please bring them home. Garden hoses that are attached to a water outlet are considered to be able to be used by all. The hoses, of course, should be re-coiled or put back neatly where they belong. Please do not leave hoses in the paths as that would constitute a safety hazard.

Orange Community Garden Rules and Regulations

Orange Village Community Garden Rules and Regulations (Updated October 2016)

The Community Garden, consistent with the Codified Ordinances of Orange Village, is under the control of the Service Director. The Service Director is authorized to promulgate the Rules and Regulations governing the use of the Community Garden, subject to the approval by the Mayor. Issues that arise should be taken to the garden committee chairs and who will then consult with the Service Director. A Community Garden Registration form, signature of acceptance of the Rules & Regulations, full payment of required fees and deposits and execution of a Release of all Claims forms must all be completed by a gardener prior to that gardener doing any work in the Garden.

GARDEN COMMITTEE

The Orange Village Community Garden governance will consist of the Orange Village Service Director, Garden Coordinator and Assistant Garden Coordinator as well as the following committees:

  •   Administrative Committee
  •   Enforcement Committee
  •   Maintenance Committee
  •   Communication Committee
  •   Social Committee

    The Mayor or Mayor’s designee has authority to make final decisions regarding maintenance, nuisances, and appeals in consultation with the Committee Chairs.

    Committee Chairs will be selected at the first Garden Meeting of each calendar year by those present at the meeting. If there is a vacancy in a Committee Chair, it will be filled at the next Garden Meeting by those present at the meeting. If vacancies have not been filled committees will be combined as determined by the Service Director

    EXPECTATIONS OF GARDENERS

  •   Control weeds and overgrowth of plot and surrounding paths. Walking paths are not to be blocked or damaged. Weeds shall not be left in the pathways. Dispose of garden waste in designated areas only
  •   Do not leave hoses charged
  •   Keep shed neat and return all shared tools to shed daily
  •   Be respectful of other gardeners’ produce
  •   Lock garden gate upon leaving to ensure garden remains secure
  •   If you incur a hardship and cannot maintain your plot due to injury or illness, please

    notify the Enforcement Committee Chair or the Maintenance Committee Chair. An effort will be made to help the gardener with volunteers

Garden

Enforcement Committee Chair, with the support of the Service Director:

ENFORCEMENT

  •   First violation: Notification of infraction with expectation of resolution within TWO WEEKS
  •   Second warning: Notification on continued infraction with expectation of resolution within ONE

    WEEK

  •   Third warning: Notification of continued infraction with expectation of resolution within THREE

    DAYS.

  •   If infractions are not corrected as outlined above the appropriate measures will be taken as follows:

o If the infraction involves weed control or plant overgrowth of the garden plot, the plot will be possibly be sprayed with herbicide and the plot will be covered with a tarp

o If the infraction involves paths which are not properly maintained, the Service Director will spray the paths with an herbicide.

Any of the above infractions which are not corrected after three warnings will result in the loss of the gardener’s deposit and garden and gardener will not be allowed to rent a plot in future years without input of the Garden Enforcement Committee Chair and approval of the Service Director

 Appeals may be made to the Garden Enforcement Committee Chair who will make a recommendation to the Service Director for enforcement of infractions. The Service Director will have final authority on enforcement of all infractions

FEES, DATES AND ASSIGNMENT OF PLOTS:

Annual fees are $25.00 plus a deposit $75.00. The Mayor or Mayor’s designee will collect fees and deposits and assign plots to tenants.

Gardeners that violate any of the above expectations will face the following action at the discretion of the

Existing gardener who is an Orange Village resident
New gardener who is an Orange Village resident
Request for second plot who is an Orange Village resident Non-Orange Village residents

Assignment of Plots:

January 1 – January 13, 2017 January 14 – February 3, 2017 February 4 – February 17, 2017 February 18 – March 3, 2017

  •   Orange Village residents will be given priority over non-residents when requesting location and quantity of plots.
  •   Assignment of plots is at the discretion of the Mayor or Mayor’s designee
  •   Within each time category above, priority will be given on a first come basis with the date/time

    set by the Mayor or Mayor’s designee receiving signed forms and payment of fees.

Deposits:

  •   At the end of October (weather dependent) the Enforcement Committee Chair along with at

    least one other member of that committee and/or the Service Director will survey the garden

    plots to determine which gardeners will be eligible for a deposit refund.

  •   A notice will be sent to all gardeners regarding their refund status and if they will be eligible to rent a plot for the next year. Gardeners that will be renewing their plots will have their deposit

    rolled over for the next year.

April Orange Village Community Garden Meeting Notes

Garden Meeting:

Held the first Saturday of every month at the garden on warmer days or in the village hall on other days. Please join us when you can to discuss garden plans, activities, tips, etc. Please join us if you can!

Manure:

Manure will be delivered to the garden. Every gardener is asked to only take one or two wheel barrow’s full for their plots.

Shed:

Please take home anything you stored over the winter. We want to have a shed clean up day, and it will be easier for us if everyone removes personal items that were stored for the winter. If you wish to leave it for your use and that of other gardeners, then it is ok to leave it. If you do not wish for others to use it, please take it home or store it on your plot.

Personal and community items:

All items in the shed or in community areas of the garden will be considered available for community use, even if brought in by a gardener. If you do not want anyone to use the item (tool, hose, fertilizer, cart, , etc), please keep the item on your plot or take it home when you are finished with it. If a hose is connected to the water source, it will be considered available for community use. Otherwise, please unhook it after use and store on your plot. Hoses and tools are not supplied by Orange Village, so we always appreciate when people bring items to share.

Shed Clean up day:

Please join us for Shed clean up day on May 20th from 9am to noon. Rain date is May 21st.

Garden Socials:

Once the weather is warm enough, every Friday from 6-8pm will be a garden social in the community garden. Come and garden and socialize. Bring snacks or drinks if you like. We look forward to meeting with you!

Field Trips in the planning stages:

Possible field trip locations we are currently considering are: Holden Arboretum visit and picnic, Ohio State Extension Community Garden, Cleveland Community Gardens, Huff neighborhood Garden and Winery, Community Garden near W. 25th and Lutheran Hospital, Rid-All Green Partnership.  More to come…

Labor Day Weekend Salute  (September) to Orange Garden visits:

We plan to have a Orange Village Community Garden Open House during the Salute to Orange in September. Gardeners can show off their harvest, and we can show off the beauty of the garden. More details to come…

Garden Etiquette:

Please keep pathways clean of materials or weeds. To ensure a nice experience for everyone, this will be enforced.

Need Leaf Hummus, Wood chips, or logs?:

You can sign up for delivery of leaf hummus, wood chips, or logs to your home in Orange Village on the Orange Village web site.

Garden Tours:

If you have a group of children, from a school, scout troop, birthday party or other group, and you would like for them to have a garden tour, we would love for them to visit the OVCG. Please let us know how we can help!

March 2017 Garden Meeting Notes

Hello Orange Village Community Garden Gardeners! Garden meetings will again be held every 1st Saturday of the month at 10am at the garden or Orange Village Community Hall, depending on the weather. We have productive and fun meetings, planning events and activities in the community garden. We often share information and tips. Please join us if you can! Here are some topics we discussed:

Compost:

Rid All compost will be purchased and split among gardeners interested. Stay tuned.

Horse Manure:

Will be ordered or donated and picked up and delivered to the garden for graders to use in their community garden plots. Each gardener is limited to 1-2 wheel barrows full so that everyone gets some.

Leaf Hummus:

More will be delivered to the garden this year – in the bin just outside the garden.

Garden improvements for this year:

The fence is being repaired, and two new raised beds added this year to accommodate more gardeners.

Gardeners maintenance reminder:

Please remember to pull weeds in your plot (before they bolt) and also from the path around your beds.

Upcoming Maintenance Gathering planned:

A clean up day will be organized to clean up the shed and area around the shed. Volunteers

Plant Sales:

Cuyahoga Community College holds a garden sale every year in their green house.

Brockville Ohio Extension holds a plant sale.

We will post information and dates for upcoming sales that we are aware of.

Recipe for insect control:

A gardener shared this recipe for insect control: 2 TBSP garlic oil to 1 quart of water. Keep it in the refrigerator and use it to spray on plants to deter insect pests naturally.

do not eat this recipe; the oil creates an anaerobic environment, and it is best not to eat it in case there could be clostridium botulinum that grows in the anaerobic environment to produce botulism toxin)

Need Garden Help while on vacation or other reason?

Please contact Arian Smith or anyone on the garden committees, because we know of some young people who are available to volunteer.  They can help weed or water when you are unable to visit the garden. Please let us know in advance.
